RISING WATERS

Storm surge drives rising waters
In against the retreating tide
Building up into a swirling flood
Overcoming river banks, degrading beaches
Churning waters overwhelming sodden land.
Floodwaters fill the basement
Flow through the ground floor, filthy.
Head upstairs, seek shelter above raging waters.
House shudders, heart skips a beat.
Below, rats have the same idea
Seeking sanctuary on the upper floor.
Driven mad with terror, they bite
And claw, vicious. Now, not only waters
But, rodents provide a threat.
Retreat onto roof: Rats go, too.
No escape from them or wild waters
Rising ever nearer, churning, churning.
Fight them off. Cling to roof
Slick with rain and blood.
More clamber up. Water rises higher.
Will help arrive before it’s too late?

BAD OMENS

Probably should’ve stayed home
When that black cat crossed his path
But, could never recall whether that
Is a good omen or a bad one.
The walls running with blood
And, the rain of frogs
Surely were more certain signs
That day was doomed to be dire.
But, no, ignored them, rationalised
Told himself it wasn’t meant for him
Though the clustering cockroaches
That spelt out his name
And, the birds twining
Disturbing patterns overhead
Could hardly be denied.
But, by then, it was too late
The stars had aligned, just briefly
Released the Abomination from its prison
Starving hungry after aeons
Free just long enough to seize him up
Devour him in one gulp
Before returning to its eldritch jail cell.
An undeniably bad day…

THE HARLEQUINADE

Wild and tumultuous
A carnival of the damned
A cavalcade of the cursed
Seeking sinners
As prey or partygoers
Overawing
Overhead

OXYRHYNCHUS

Ancient garbage
Papyrus finds wait intact
Concealing secrets
Gently unfurl sacred scrolls
Unleash forgotten horrors
