Mathew C. was born in 1980 and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He left university as a philosopher and marketer and became an analyst information operations for the army. He was deployed in the Sahel region, Afghanistan and Ukraine. There he experienced how art remains free and empowering, even in violent entrapment. This helped him cope with his own restrictions of living with bi-polar disorder. Creating art and surrounding himself with creative people and their work is part of his survival strategy.

Mathew mainly works with different kinds of pastels, aquarelle and gouache on paper. His art collection inspires him to experiment with new techniques. He has drawn some commissioned portraits but remains an amateur, who occasionally writes poems:

Ethics thrive with moderation
Good intentions turn harmful in the extreme
We don’t find ourselves at any one location
But somewhere in between
