JUNGLE

Wormhole vines portal roots snake
Stretch in infinite universe
Like a scientific picture
Of brain cell close-up diagram
Tree galaxies with long branches
Limbs grow wild labyrinth
Leaf and grass stars green shine
Fall away to be born or reborn
Planets of animals fall prey
To distance and rotation
Asteroid and dust insects
Churn in constant creation
Black hole quicksand devours
All who stray to close
In background dark gravity
Lurks in celestial shadow

X ON ATTIC WALL

Inherit from uncle
Eighteenth century house
Downstairs remodel done
Next, room on second floor

While painting hear noises
Coming from the attic
Investigate to find
Wind and open window

On far side of dark room
Large black X marks blue wall
Leave and return shortly
With can of paint in hand

Room glows, arms reach out from
Letter intersection
Voice speaks from other side
“Forbidden to block gate”

THREE TANKA

monster under bed
suffers countless blows to head
dies of concussion
below mattress forgotten
on clean sheets girl and first time

break into beach house
of special effects guru
on Halloween night
to steal monster collection
when they wake from yearlong sleep

ten people on porch
knock on door Halloween night
all dressed the same
crew of marooned aliens
kill and steal Chevy for parts

FIVE HAIKU

Halloween zombies
night before gather costumes
slabs of human skin

alien captain
tells crew to knock on front doors
Halloween night

HALloween
year 2001
scary

Halloweend
name of last Halloween
coming soon

Halloween monsters
looking for favorite threat
humans that answer
