AFRAID OF THE DARK

Shadows slowly creeping
Up the stair, along the hall
Whilst you are sleeping
Shadows creep up the wall
Fitfully your eyes open wide
Something disturbed your sleep
From the dark nowhere to hide
Pray God your soul to keep
Admit the truth if you will:
Do you fear the darkling night
When the very air is still
And there is no comforting light?
If you are afraid of the dark, my son
Then quake, for the night has just begun…

NEW IN TOWN

“So, you’re the new folks in town?”
Says the man in the store.
“No, we’re the old folks,
“We’ve been asleep a century or more.
“We’ve just woken up after
A very long sleep.”
“Oh, that’s nice to know.
“Did you notice our prices are cheap?
“The best in town, we can’t be beat.”
“Unfortunately, sir, it’s you we’ll eat.”

THE LADY OF EVERYDAY

He names her
The Lady of Every Day
For she is there every day
Always at the corner of his eye
A face in the crowd or empty street
Wherever he goes
Wherever he is
Whatever he does
Whoever he’s with
Always, always there
Every day
Dressed in old-fashioned clothing
Invisible to others
Silent
Just there
Always there
Every day
Until he ends it
Joins her in death

HAGWOOD

She waits
She lingers in a forest glade
She waits
Until the light does fade
She waits
For the unwary traveller
She waits
For the tipsy reveller
Do not wait
Do not linger
If you hold your life dear
Do not wait
Do not linger
The hag of the wood is near
