Vikki Yeates is an illustrator living and working in Bath, England, although she spent many years in Brighton, where she received a Degree in Illustration in the early 90s. Vikki would describe her work as ‘Gothic Art’; dark, atmospheric images with a dream-like quality, inspired by sinister tales and macabre stories. This type of subject matter is well-suited to her style of drawing, which has been influenced by German Expressionism, particularly the wood-block prints of ‘Die Brucke’. A few years ago she became interested in experimenting with the written word in her paintings, taking the basic idea of illustration one step further, to create works of art which can stand alone. Scratching words into the ink seems to imbue the picture with power and the words become imagery. She uses poetry written by her favourite poets (including Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes) and she also uses an automatic writing technique. Vikki’s black and white work is usually either scraperboard or lino print. She enjoys using media which stops her from becoming too realistic; Lino is perfect for this, as her ideas are always simplified by the strong line of the cutting tool. Vikki Yeates lives in a small flat in Bath with her two children and three Jack Russell dogs. See more of Vikki’s art HERE
